Plot

Violet Weston lives with her alcoholic husband, Beverly, a writer and academic, and her daughter Ivy. She has been a drug addict for many years. She is also suffering from cancer of the mouth, and one day Beverly hires a girl, Johnna, to look after her.

Shortyly afterwards he disappears. Ivy summons the other members of the family. Violet’s sister, Mattie Fae, comes with her husband Charlie and their son Little Charles, loved by his father but despised by his mother. Violet’s other daughters join them. Barbara comes with her husband Bill and their daughter Jean: their marriage is on the rocks. Karen, whose relationships tend to end in disaster, brings her current fiancé, Steve, a flashy businessman. The police arrive to say they have found Beverly’s body. Their examination of the body shows that he drowned himself. The funeral and the family gathering bring out all the accumulated resentment and bitterness.

Sinopsis

La familia Weston es compleja, en estructura y también en entresijos. El matrimonio formado por Beverly Weston y su esposa Violet (Meryl Streep) tiene tres hijas, una nieta, una criada y muchos trapos sucios que lavar. La familia se dispone a pasar reunida unos días en una vasta casa situada en Oklahoma y eligen para hacerlo un mes sofocante: agosto.
Las vacaciones familiares serán todo lo contrario a un encuentro idílico. Los acontecimientos turbios y desconcertantes se suceden y ponen a prueba a cada uno de los miembros. El patriarca desaparece repentinamente. Violet (su mujer), adicta a los fármacos, no tiene muy buena relación con sus hijas, en especial con la mayor, Barbara (Julia Roberts), con la que discute constantemente. La primogénita ha sido engañada por su marido y su hija, inmersa en la adolescencia más hormonal, no hace más fáciles las cosas. Un cóctel putrefacto, aderezado con el asfixiante calor propio del mes, que desgastará la relación parental de los Weston, cambiando para siempre su futuro.

Película no recomendada a menores de 16 años.

The painting is no less than Klimt’s Woman in Gold, which was stolen by the Nazis during the war.
